The Umweltbundesamt's protected-areas dataset Naturschutzgebiete Österreich 2026, on data.gv.at, maps 6 national parks: Donau-Auen, Neusiedler See - Seewinkel, Hohe Tauern, Thayatal, Kalkalpen and Gesäuse. Its data is as of 31 December 2025, compiled from the federal states' INSPIRE services in May 2026.1
Which national parks are in the dataset?
The dataset's national park layer has one record per park, zone and federal state. Hohe Tauern spans three states and Donau-Auen two, so we list each park once with all its states, using the codes in the dataset's own code list: B Burgenland, K Kärnten, NÖ Niederösterreich, OÖ Oberösterreich, S Salzburg, ST Steiermark, T Tirol, W Wien.1
| National park (as the data names it) | Federal states (codes in the data) |
|---|---|
| Donau-Auen | NÖ/W |
| Neusiedler See - Seewinkel | B |
| Hohe Tauern | K/S/T |
| Thayatal | NÖ |
| Kalkalpen | OÖ |
| Gesäuse | ST |
The data names Neusiedler See - Seewinkel by zone (for example Neusiedler See - Seewinkel: Naturzone); we use the name before the colon.
Is that every national park?
The federal ministry's page on national parks also names six.2 We used that page only to check the count.
Can this list be reused?

What this page cannot tell you
- Names only. We use the park names and federal states, not the boundaries or areas.
- No start dates here. The data gives the year of each park's current regulation, which is not the year the park began.
- Data as of 31 December 2025. Later changes are not in it.

Key takeaways
- The dataset maps 6 national parks.
- Hohe Tauern spans three federal states, Donau-Auen two.
- Credit: the Umweltbundesamt, from the federal states' INSPIRE services.
- What we would skip: reading the list as a ranking or a travel guide. It records an official designation; it says nothing about opening, access or conditions, so check each park's own information before you go.
