The most visited museums in four countries, ranked only by official visitor figures: France (musée du Louvre, 8,681,079 admissions in 2024), Austria, Denmark and Finland. For the other countries we found no site figures we may reuse, or could not reach them, so they are not ranked here.

Why only four countries?
We only rank places by official visitor figures that a government body publishes for each site, under terms that allow reuse on a commercial website. We looked for such figures in all the European countries on this site and in Japan. For most, the figures are national totals only, the terms do not allow commercial reuse, or the official site could not be reached. We do not use rankings from media, review sites or awards.
Each country counts differently (admissions, visits or visitors; all museums or only state-recognised ones), so compare within a country, not across them.
Key takeaways
- Rankings use official visitor figures only.
- Each country counts differently: compare within a country.
- What we would skip: any top-ten list that does not say where its numbers come from.
